Abstract Techniques in Realism Painting: The College Fund
Переглядів 7537 років тому
This video shows me using abstract techniques in the background of one of my realism paintings, "The College Fund." I had this wonderful vintage pedal taxi in my collection for almost a year, but couldn’t find the spark for a story to tell about it - until one snowy day in New York, the story found me. In January, 2016, I was visiting Manhattan when a major snowstorm blanketed the region. The s...
Coffee Brake

The wordplay nature of my paintings often means that one funny title or image can spawn a dozen more ideas. "Coffee Brake" was conceived when I was developing "Coffee Monster" but I wasn't quite sure how to combine vehicular activity with a cup of joe. When I found this lovely toy delivery van, I knew my donut-in-the-road idea was no longer “half-baked.”

Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea

About my painting, "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea." Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea depicts a daring ocean explorer searching the briny deep. The scene, with its bathtub toys and seashore treasures, evokes the elaborate make believe of a child enthralled by the secrets of the high seas.

I would use a 12" drywall knife, instead of your hand. You can use parchment paper in-between the canvas and the knife to avoid any scuffs. And the canvas will be perfectly flat.you can even use a plastic wallpaper knife. If the canvas isn't completely flat, when you put the protective coat of varnish it will show every imperfection. I was just curious what kind of glue you use. I bought some ink on canvas prints and would prefer to mount them on Masonite, rather then stretcher bars.
Great suggestions 👍 the glue is called Miracle Muck it’s produced by a company called Raphael’s - you’ll find it on the web - good luck and wipe the back of your prints with a tack cloth this will get rid off any little bits 👍
Planning to put up one. May i know all the equipment needed for such business. Thanks
Maybe the title should say 'mounting prints'.🤷🏼♀️
It would be much better with voice, you explaining what youre doing.
You’re right - in fact I’m going to be redoing my UA-cam page and updating many of the videos
Worst video on the whole internet!!
I'm wondering how you get that glossy finish on the black ground and your other painted items. It looks like an aged patina of finishes I remember from 50 years ago.
There are so many ways to achieve the end result. Yours is broadly similar to what I've done recently. I experiment with different methods on small boards to find what works best for me. That may not be best for others of course 😊
Hi Philip- sounds as though you’re doing it right - experimenting on smaller pieces is the way to go 👍
it would be a helpful and useful video if you would mention what glue you used. I think everything is common sense
Thanks Leslie - the glue is called Miracle Muck, it’s a bit difficult to find- I’m thinking of doing an updated video with alternative glues and some added tricks of the trade
Masterful Richard! Thanks for sharing. Hope you and Sharon are doing well.
Thanks Jim - doing great 👍
What is the actual glue you are using?
Turning on the lights would be an productive first step....
Greetings Richard, (my grandsun's name is Richard), where do you get the glue? If I were to do a paint pour should I do so before I glue it or after? Thank You.
Fantastic
the grain of the canvas must be square with the board
Great point👍 really important - if you happen to mount on a board larger than you need you could trim it into alignment but far better to get it right in the first place 👍
My job framing
Thank for sharing …
Thank you for this video, What is the best per GSM maximum should be linen to attach plywood in egg tempera? I am waiting for answering, thank you.
I’ve never used egg tempera but it’s ok to mount linen to plywood - I would give the plywood a coat of gesso first to seal it and to reduce the acidity in it - good luck👍
You are an absolute hidden gem. If there is an online course or book sign me up. I have gotten more inspiration and knowledge from 3 of your videos than I have from anywhere else in quite some time. Simply amazing piece of work.
I can't believe nobody commented here....You are an incredibly talented artist....all the "objects" on that wall look amazing! Thanks for posting this, now I want to do this on one of my paintings, lol.
Thanks Dennis - that's very kind of you to say - I'm in the process of updating everything so stay tuned!
@@richardhallfineart You are very welcome, you deserve the compliments. I look forward to seeing more of your videos!
Richard I have a client with one of my paintings in another country, I followed your process but she is saying there are a couple of bumps appearing, what can I tell her to do the flatten them ?
Hi Bobby - that’s a tough situation- being in another country makes it hard - it may be that a change in climate and humidity has caused this - i have had this problem once or twice over the years and have fixed it by laying a cloth over the painting and VERY GENTLY using an iron on the lowest setting - I would be okay doing this myself on my own painting but it’s your call to suggest this to your customer to do themselves- I hope you can fix it
@@richardhall3589 this is what I have suggested to them, thank you Sharon x
How thick is your wooden board ?
How long does it last? I am selling embellished Giclees and I need this to last a long time.
Great video! What type of glue is that?
I am doing a large format painting 7' x 8' would I approach this the same way you have here? I have noticed another example using laminall with a iron for heat to apply the linen, what do you know about this application. I am building a frame to hold my Masonite board.
Darlinggg!
Thank you so much for explaining this so simply...still I've a query... If on a mdf board which is mounted with canvas ( 6×2 ft), I want to paste/fix some wooden circles/ semicircles to complete a art piece. How can I paste it. With which medium. Could you please help me in this... would be happy to see you reply.
Priyanka - in the past when i have wanted to attach something to the canvas (and i'm assuming the shapes are flat) i have used Molding Paste - it doesn't crack and seems to hold really well. Good luck with your project
@@richardhallfineart thank you so much for this prompt reply. And thank you for this information aswell.. thanks again
Thanks for the video sir but please mention d details of d product used. And Mk ur voice more audible.
Amazing Sending my support Stay safe
It just occurred to me that one possible disadvantage of painting on boards is looking ahead a few hundred years. If your work ends up in a museum and either needs restoration or is damaged or vandalized will it be as easy to restore as a painting done on stretched canvas or linen ? It's probably something that no one should even be worrying about but it is a factor.
Can you share you glaze recipe?
This video makes us appreciate seeing you and Sharon in Edwards, Co all the more. I'm not sure how you do it, but thanks. Jim and Fabian (Egg Drop Soup, etc.)
sorry but what do you use to protect the background. ? varnish it ?
Love the way you craeated the background texture. Very creative.
What are you using to write for the chalk? Oil pastel? Oil stick?
Wow! Impressive!
thank you
Firstly, nice easy to follow video. Can I ask what method you use to cut the board with after mounting? Knife or Saw? - Thx again!
I just stumbled on your videos and just wanted to say this was fun to watch! I just got done watching the first step and it switched to this one. That is such a neat way to do string!!
What did you use to finish the background/sky before applying the patina process in order to help make the excess patina paint come off so easily? Perhaps the background was completely finished to the paint of being varnished? I love your work and appreciate your teaching here in the videos you have put together. Thank you!
how we mix galaz oil or water
sounded like a tv in the other room. I couldn't hear him good.
Really? Just listened again and didn't have any problem. Sorry it didn't work for you.
I used this method to paste a painted canvas over fiber board. But the glue has seeped out of the canvas and added a cloudy layer over my paint. Please help. I understand this video was for blank canvas but please help me
I could not find miracle muck on eBay or Amazon. Where did you buy it from?
Info sheet www.canvaspanels.com/Instructions,MiracleMuck.pdf Sources www.canvaspanels.com/OC-ADHESIVES,001.html raphaelsap.com/miracle-muck-1-gallon-bottle/ www.judsonsart.com/products/miracle-muck You are looking for ethylene vinyl acetate. Miracle Muck is a brand but there may be others. Good Luck!
Very useful tips.thank you
Thanks for the video sir, very good but will the board ever bend or bow? thanks Robert
Sorry, just saw this. You can do larger pieces on 1/2" gatorboard, but 1/2" doesn't fit into the frames as well (it sticks out the back. I've done 48x60 on 3/8" gatorboard. Not trouble with bowing, but I do frame them all.
Thanks.
I've seen others weight the canvas down until dry. Is that not necessary? Where would one find the canvas glue and what type of board did you use? I have some completed works on canvas that I need to glue to a board for framing and I've watched your vid tree times and really like your technique.
I use a product called "Miracle Muck." It is acid free and reversible. raphaelsap.com/miracle-muck/ The board I use is called "Gatorboard," and is available in 3/8" and 1/2." It is lightweight yet sturdy. A foam filled board, but NOT Foam Core. Foam Core will warp! I used to add weights, but it is not necessary. It dries quickly without warping. Not sure if that's because I'm in Arizona, where it is hot and dry, but I don't have a problem. It's hard to get the weights evenly distributed and not leave indentations. Hope that's helpful! Let me know if you have any more questions.
Thanks for the response. I ordered the Miracle Muck.
Very good, let me know how it goes.
I can't wait to get to next year's. We only have one print & I can't wait to come out & see what speaks to me... to add another. We have a 2 Bee or not 2 Bee print... Thanks for sharing your talents!!!!
